NBA Match Guide: NY Knicks vs DET Pistons — Where to Watch
NY Knicks vs DET Pistons is the NBA’s opening-week headliner at Madison Square Garden, and the storylines write themselves. The Knicks raise their championship banner — then face the team that swept them 3-0 last season and has won six straight in the series.
The Pistons arrive without All-NBA center Jalen Duren (right hamstring strain, reevaluated in two weeks), while the Knicks are 0-2 and still searching for their championship rhythm. This NBA Match Guide breaks down everything you need before tip-off.

Star Watch: Jalen Brunson vs Cade Cunningham
Jalen Brunson — NY Knicks
Brunson is listed as questionable (wrist) on the early injury report, but all signs point to him playing through it on opening week. He averaged 33 points and 8 assists in the most recent meeting with Detroit — a 126-111 loss — and remains New York’s unquestioned closer.
- Last vs DET: 33 points, 8 assists
- Key trait: elite shot creation in isolation, ruthless in the fourth quarter
Cade Cunningham — DET Pistons
Cunningham torched the Knicks for 42 points, 13 assists, and 8 rebounds in the February sweep-clinching win. With Duren sidelined, Detroit’s offense runs even more exclusively through its All-NBA guard. Cunningham opened this season with 22 points and 9 rebounds against Boston before the Duren injury changed the Pistons’ interior equation.

Matchup Analysis: Can the Knicks End the Pistons’ Six-Game Stranglehold?
New York’s Championship Hangover
The Knicks have stumbled out of the gate at 0-2, and the numbers are ugly: 100 points on 37.2% shooting in their opener, with just 11 three-pointers made. Mike Brown’s side is still integrating pieces and rediscovering the defensive identity that carried them to the 2026 title.
The Duren absence is a massive reprieve. Karl-Anthony Towns and Andre Drummond should dominate the paint against a Detroit frontcourt now leaning on Paul Reed, who contributed 19 points and 11 rebounds against Miami but is a clear downgrade from an All-NBA big man.
Detroit’s Interior Void
Duren averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds last season en route to All-NBA third-team honors. Without him, Detroit’s rebounding margin and rim protection take a significant hit. The Pistons will need Ausar Thompson and Tobias Harris to crash the glass collectively.
But Detroit still has Cunningham — and a supporting cast that swept New York by a combined 84 points across three meetings last season. The Pistons know they can beat this team, and that psychological edge matters in a building that will be emotionally charged for the banner ceremony.
Head-to-Head: The Streak vs The History
Detroit’s six-game regular-season winning streak in this matchup is the current defining fact of the rivalry. Before that run, the Knicks had won 16 consecutive meetings. The pendulum has swung violently — and New York needs a response.
Prediction: NY Knicks 112-107 DET Pistons — the Duren injury tips the interior battle decisively toward Towns and Drummond, and Brunson’s wrist holds up enough to outduel Cunningham in a close fourth quarter.
