Team News: Philadelphia’s Frontcourt Crisis vs New York’s Hart Question
PHI 76ers: Big Men Depleted, LeBron Cleared
The PHI 76ers’ frontcourt is thin. Adem Bona is continuing to recover from a foot sprain and has returned to practice but remains without a firm return date. Dominick Barlow has been dealing with a back issue, and Anfernee Simons has been managing a hamstring strain. Ariel Hukporti suffered a season-ending Achilles tear in preseason, removing a rotation big from the equation entirely.
LeBron James was listed as a rest/game-time decision in the preseason finale but is expected to make his 76ers regular-season debut at the Garden. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (finger) is questionable.
Philadelphia’s likely approach: Maxey and Edgecombe in the backcourt, Brown and James on the wings, Embiid anchoring the middle — but with limited rim protection behind Embiid, the Knicks will attack the paint relentlessly.
NY Knicks: Hart Expected, Brunson Monitoring Wrist
Josh Hart missed the preseason finale with right ankle soreness, but head coach Mike Brown said he does not expect the injury to impact Hart’s status for Tuesday. Hart himself was noncommittal: “We’ll see in two days”. He is also managing a lingering finger injury that will require in-season maintenance.
Jalen Brunson is listed as a game-time decision with a wrist issue. Brunson is the engine of New York’s offense and the player the banner ceremony is built around — his availability is the single biggest variable in this game.
Star Watch
LeBron James — PHI 76ers
The 41-year-old enters his 24th NBA season on a two-year, $8 million deal with Philadelphia, chasing a fifth championship. In preseason, he showed the connection with Tyrese Maxey is already functional, finishing an alley-oop off a Maxey feed in his home preseason debut. Against a Knicks defense that will load up on Embiid, LeBron’s ability to operate as a secondary playmaker and spot-up threat determines whether Philadelphia’s spacing holds.
Jalen Brunson — NY Knicks
If Brunson plays, he is the best player on the floor in a Knicks uniform and the emotional center of the banner ceremony. His pull-up jumper and pick-and-roll manipulation target the exact weakness Philadelphia has: drop coverage and limited rim protection behind Embiid. If Brunson sits or is limited, New York’s half-court offense loses its primary creator against a team built to score in bunches.
Matchup Analysis: History, Form, and the Paint Battle
The all-time series belongs to Philadelphia. The 76ers hold a 266-214 regular-season record against the Knicks across more than 60 years of competition. But recent history belongs to New York. The Knicks swept the 76ers in the second round of the 2025-26 playoffs, and Philadelphia’s last five games against New York include four losses by an average of 14.5 points.
The 2025-26 regular season series was split in a strange way: Philadelphia won both games in New York in December and January, then lost both home meetings, including a 138-89 blowout in February. The playoff sweep is the more recent and more relevant data point.
The tactical fault line is the paint. Philadelphia enters Opening Night with Bona out, Hukporti out for the season, and Barlow managing a back issue. That leaves Embiid as the only proven rim protector, and Embiid cannot guard everything. The Knicks, with Karl-Anthony Towns and Mitchell Robinson, will attack the offensive glass and force Philadelphia’s guards into help rotations. On the other end, LeBron and Brown give the 76ers two wings who can punish New York’s aggressive closeouts — but only if Brunson’s wrist and Hart’s ankle limit New York’s perimeter defensive versatility.
Prediction: NY Knicks 118, PHI 76ers 112. The banner ceremony provides an emotional lift, and the Knicks’ frontcourt depth exploits Philadelphia’s depleted big-man rotation. LeBron’s debut produces moments, and Maxey keeps it close, but New York’s home-court edge and recent dominance in the matchup hold through the fourth quarter.
